#ResolveToWrite: A month-long challenge to keep 2016 on track

It’s already February. How’s that writing project going?

That’s right guys, we’re now in the second month of 2016. (Is anyone else still writing “2015” in their notes and furiously scratching it out every time?)

There’s a decent chance that these past few weeks have gone by in a blink of an eye for many of us who have been struggling with slow progress, stagnant attempts or missed goals in our writing—not the start of a new year most of us envision. This is totally normal, but frustrating.

Luckily, there are still 11 whole months left in 2016 to get back on track. I thought February 1st seemed like an apt time to come up with a writing challenge. So behold! Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to complete these 29 writing prompts for each day in February. (Turns out 2016 is a leap year—consider it a bonus.)

#ResolveToWrite: A February Challenge

The purpose & who it’s for

The goal is simple: My hope for you and me both is that we write something every day for a month—even if, some days, there’s only time for 15 minutes. I also want you to feel inspired and playful. Even though this is a writing challenge, it should be fun—not a chore!

I had so much fun coming up with unexpected, thought-provoking prompts that writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry alike would enjoy interpreting these prompts however they see fit.

How to participate

Starting today, dedicate at least a few minutes every day for a month to writing something—a blog post, a short story, a stream-of-consciousness diary entry, a microblog on Instagram, whatever. Document your experience, progress and anything you publish online using the hashtag #ResolveToWrite. (Tweet about it now.)

This challenge is not about arbitrary rules that don’t apply to your writing goals. So if you’re working on a novel and want to focus on that, you don’t have to use every single writing prompt. (Though you may find some of the prompts will spark inspiration for a scene, conversation or turn of events.) And if you join in late, no worries. You can start this challenge any time. As long as you use the #ResolveToWrite hashtag, I’ll be there cheering you on.

Perks if you join in!

If you join in during the first two days using the hashtag #ResolveToWrite, I’ll feature you and any work you’d like to promote in WTH Weekly, the newsletter I send out every Saturday. (You must also be subscribed to the newsletter—after all, you’ll want to be able to see it and forward it to your biggest fan!)

And if you participate at all during the month using #ResolveToWrite and are subscribed to WTH Weekly, you’ll be eligible to win this “Write Like a Motherfucker” mug from The Rumpus. (The Rumpus is not sponsoring this giveaway—I just thought the theme and the heart-shaped design were too perfect for a February writing challenge!) All you have to do is fill in your info using the Raffelcopter widget below to verify. See below for entry details.

Feminist Apparel giveaway! (Why do we need feminism?)

Feminist Apparel giveaway

I can think of a lot of reasons why we need feminism.

I’ll use some examples from my own personal experience, though there are far more reasons than these few:

Because the first time I was called a slut, I was 12 years old.

Because I don’t feel safe walking to parking garages alone.

Because my school campus underreports sexual assault cases.

Because I know too many people (i.e., more than zero) who have been sexually assaulted.

Because I’m called a “bitch” if I ignore catcalls or “compliments” on the street.

Because these awful things are considered normal, part of life, to be expected.

…And those experiences—through the lens of a thin, white, middle-class woman—are just the tip of the iceberg when you consider the issues women around the world face every day.

Everything feminism stands for aims to address these issues.

Which is why instead of fearing the F-word, I want to wear my feminism on my sleeve (or on the front of my new shirt, pictured above). And if you enter today’s giveaway with Feminist Apparel, you could, too. Read on.

Feminist Apparel giveaway

Feminist Apparel is a kickass clothing company that stands for equality and encourages others to do the same—while looking smart in one of their tanks or tees. The styles are sassy, clever and playful… but dead serious. (Here’s the one I’m wearing in the top photo. I love this one and this one, too.)

Most importantly, Feminist Apparel puts its money where its mouth is. Proceeds from their sales go to women-empowering nonprofits like Women’s Way, so you know your purchase is going toward a worthy cause.

But one lucky feminism-loving reader will win a shirt for free.

The details: Win one shirt of any style, size & color (winner’s choice!) from Feminist Apparel by using the Rafflecopter widget below. (You have to leave a blog post comment first to unlock the other entries.) Note that you can tweet daily about the giveaway for bonus entries. The contest will be open all week until Friday, July 11th, at 3:00 p.m. EST upon which one winner will be chosen at random. And yes, it’s open to international readers! I request the winner responds within 72 hours of being contacted, or else the prize will go to someone else. You’ll get extra love from me if you tweet/Instagram a photo of yourself in your new shirt once you receive it. (Be sure to tag @FeministApparel and @WittyCassieHere!)

It’s so important to me to work with brands I believe in, so I’m psyched to be partnering up with Feminist Apparel. And, of course, I’m psyched about my new shirt!

Let’s celebrate the amazing things women and men can do when we work together… like ending sexual assault, sexism and victim blaming once and for all.

And tell me: Why do you need feminism?

I’ve got a pretty exciting giveaway to share with all my photography-loving friends.

As you might’ve guessed from the title of this blog post, you can enter to win a Canon Rebel T3i DSLR!

How did this come about? The lovely Latrina from Of Trees and Hues recently had a birthday and wanted to do something incredibly special (and generous) to celebrate. So she asked me and a bunch of other talented bloggers to help her give one lucky snap-happy person out there a brand new camera.

Here’s the whole gang of sponsors who helped make this possible. (You can click on each person’s photo to visit their blog.)

THE DETAILS

The contest runs through May 6th at midnight. One winner will be chosen at random the next day and will be announced over at Latrina’s blog. As for the camera, it’s a fantastic entry-level DSLR that’s perfect for anyone who wants to become familiar with shooting in manual—or just someone who wants an upgrade from their camera phone! The Canon Rebel comes with a 18-55mm zoom lens and is valued at $650. Use the Rafflecopter below to unlock your entries. You can enter as many as 158 times if you tweet about the giveaway and follow/like/etc. every sponsor!

A big thanks goes out to Latrina for inviting me to be a part of this. Now get to entering! (I’m entering, too.)

Good luck!

Spreading the love: A giveaway with a twist

Out of the many joys of being a part of the blogging world, giveaways are one popular way of promoting your blog and/or winning free stuff. (And, as I’ve mentioned, I like winning free stuff.) But while I’ve participated in many giveaways with the hopes of profiting in some small way, I’ve never been too interested in hosting one of my own. This is partly due to my lack of self-made products to offer (unless you count my stellar copyediting services enticing!), but also because I feel a bit silly using giveaways as a form of self-promotion. Not that there’s anything wrong with it. It’s just that I feel a little self-conscious at the prospect. For that reason, it will be very interesting the first time I hand out my new, sexy little business cards to someone other than family members.

Stranger: So, what’s the name of your blog?

Me: Oh! “Witty Title Here.” Let me give you a business card. Kind of weird to have business cards for a personal blog, I realize. Especially one that boasts poop jokes. Not that it reeks of poop jokes or anything. Ha, see what I did there!? Reeks of poop jokes? Anyway, that’s my face on the back of the card.

What can I say? I keeps it classy.

But back to the point, I changed my mind when I happened upon a nifty little giveaway on Lisa’s blog, joycreation, that has a nice pay-it-forward thing going on. Here’s the gist:

The first three people to comment on this post will receive a little gift – something personal from me to you.

However, there are some rules:

  • Within a year (I’ll do it this month) I’ll create something unique to share with the first three people to comment on this post.
  • But, in order to receive your present you have to play along.  Spread the love on your own blog (this means it’s only open to bloggers) promising to send a little special something to the first three people who comment on your post.
  • You get 72 hours to re-post, or I’ll have to move on to the next person.
  • Please only comment if you’re willing to pay it forward!

Isn’t that fun?! I was one of Lisa’s first three commenters, and I can’t wait to get a surprise from her in the mail. I also can’t wait to send something to three of you. (And I promise it will have nothing to do with copyediting.) So, you know the drill—if you’re a blogger with the desire to receive something non-creepy from me in the mail and the willingness to do the same for others, leave a comment below! Be sure you enter your email and blog URL in the appropriate fields so I can get in touch with you. Happy winning!
