Interweb Finds: Cats against feminism, why we blog & more

How has your August been going?

Mine has been great—I visited home, wrapped up my summer class, am hosting my visiting BFF/college roomie here in L.A.—but it’s also kept me away from this space. I’ve been thinking a lot about priorities, which I think I could write a lot about. There’s a lot I’ve been wanting to write about, and I’ll be sharing those thoughts here soon.

But for now, interweb finds!

The story of the skydiver who saved a woman’s life by breaking her fall with his body.

My new favorite meme: confused cats against feminism.

Vintage photos of Ellen O’Neal, the greatest woman freestyle skateboarder in the ’70s. (And a cool documentary about skate and surf culture during the same decade.)

Allie’s post “Why I Blog” resonates with me because I’ve come to similar conclusions about why I blog. (Plus, I’m also digging the sneak peak of her upcoming ebook, “Charge Up,” an ebook for introverted entrepreneurs.)

You need to read Hannah’s words on the fragility of life.

I’m fascinated by personality types, which is why Erika’s “Beginner’s Guide to Personality Type Systems” is so interesting!

Jenny Lewis has a new album out (have you seen her sassy video for “Just One of the Guys”?), so I really enjoyed this interview with her about life after Rilo Kiley, stories from her childhood acting days and songwriting while dealing with insomnia.

That’s all for this week! I’ll be back with more soon. Until then, enjoy the start of your week.

Interweb Finds: the most-hated dog, Eurotripping & more

I’m trying to be kind to my body.

Lately, I’ve had lots of aches and pains in my neck and back, and it’s no secret why. (Blogging, technically, is only making it worse.) I’ve also found myself popping more Ibuprofen than usual for headaches. So I’m doing more yoga at a new place (I’m taking a yoga studio tour, if you will, via Groupon), drinking more water and drinking less alcohol. And this week, I plan on taking the plunge and buying new running shoes. Mine are almost three years old. It’s time.

But right now, it’s interweb finds time. Check out this week’s link roundup:

Speaking of yoga, pets interrupting yoga is the cutest thing you’ll see all day.

Did you hear about the American Ninja Warrior competitor who kicked ass and broke records? She is incredible. (Kacy went to my undergrad alma mater, too—represent!)

As someone who browses rescue sites almost daily (ahem), I’m well aware of how overpopulated shelters are with pit bulls. In Los Angeles County alone, an estimated 200 pit bulls are killed every day. Here’s a powerful essay about the breed by a pit bull owner:

“There is no other dog that figures as often in the national narrative—no other dog as vilified on the evening news, no other dog as defended on television programs, no other dog as mythologized by both its enemies and its advocates, no other dog as discriminated against, no other dog as wantonly bred, no other dog as frequently abused, no other dog as promiscuously abandoned, no other dog as likely to end up in an animal shelter, no other dog as likely to be rescued, no other dog as likely to be killed.”

Check out these tree roots growing among concrete. They look like art!

I’ve loved following along on Sydney’s Eurotrip. (Doesn’t she look like she’s having a blast?)

“Women who are ambivalent about women against women against feminism.” The Bloggess nails it:

“I’m not saying you can’t choose to not be a feminist but know what you’re choosing. Don’t make a decision about a group based on the most radical beliefs of a group. Don’t get defensive if you get deeper and are exposed to difficult ideas about intersectionality and race and gender and colonialism and patriarchy and male liberation. Just listen. Some of it will make sense. Some of it won’t. Some of it will later when you’re a different person. Some of it you’ll change your mind about throughout your life and the world will change too. Some of it is bullshit. Some of it is truth. All of it is worth listening to.”

Age 30 is not a deadline. (Seriously, this mentality of “doing it all” in your twenties hurts everyone.)

And that’s all for now! Come back later this week for my monthly photo roundup, including shots of the Obama at LAX (!). But right now, I’m going to shut the computer and do a few stretches. What do you do when you’re not sick but your body hurts?

Interweb Finds: Corgis on the beach, finding your blogging roots & more

bakery

Have you ever had an idea seemingly come out of nowhere that jolts your brain and prompts you into action?

(And I’m not just talking about the awesome T-shirt sayings that come to mind during a particularly hilarious and drunken conversation.)

Anyway, I had one of those ideas over the weekend, and I went to bed, woke up and still loved it. So I think that’s a good sign. I headed on over to the local library, got a library card (finally), and picked up a few books for research. I’m being a tease, because it’s not an idea I’ll share anytime soon, but it just got me thinking…

Other weekend highlights include eating Gelato al fresco, browsing the grocery store bakery above (like the pure frosting cheeseburgers), and announcing the winner to the Feminist Apparel giveaway! Congrats to Kiersten, a feminist after my own heart.

Now, for this week’s interweb finds:

Ten words every girl should learn.

Possibly the best thing ever: Corgi Beach Day. (The next one is the day after my birthday… I AM SO GOING. Even though I don’t have a corgi.)

Have you heard about the new film Boyhood? It was filmed over the course of 12 years in a young boy’s life.

People’s attitudes toward biking and cyclists can be pretty unreasonably charged with anger. Why is that? One alarming quote:

“A 2002 study found that drivers are far more likely to see a cyclist’s infraction as stemming from ineptitude or recklessness than an identical one committed by another driver.”

WARNING: cuteness overload. Seven kittens reacting in perfect unison to a shiny object.

Fellow bloggers and writers, have you found your blogging roots?

“You need to be rooted in blogland by something other than dreams of fame and fortune. Those roots, if they run deep enough, are what will sustain you through tough times. They’re what will allow you to be flexible, to go easy on yourself, and to keep pushing.”

A fascinating read about one man who studies and diagnoses depressed and OCD animals in zoos. Related: the case for the end of the modern zoo.

That’s all for this week! Now back to those library books.

Interweb Finds: Strong female characters, summer camp for adults & more

Los Angeles sunset

Happy weekend friends!

As you read this, I’m a couple hours east of Los Angeles at Big Bear Lake! John and I are camping for the weekend (will share photos soon!), but I planned out some good interweb finds for you in advance.

Check ’em out:

An interesting article about the lack of strong female characters in films:

“Bringing in a Strong Female Character™ isn’t actually a feminist statement, or an inclusionary statement, or even a basic equality statement, if the character doesn’t have any reason to be in the story except to let filmmakers point at her on the poster and say ‘See? This film totally respects strong women!’”

OK Go’s new video for “The Writing’s on the Wall” is so darn brilliant and clever. I’d love to be on set for something like that.

I’ve been fantasizing about New Orleans lately. (The architecture! Swoon!) So I loved coming across this gorgeous NOLA house tour.

Lauren talks about the lost art of eating in, and I couldn’t agree more myself. Cooking at home is so much fun!

Genius: summer camps for adults. YES, PLEASE.

Bad Photoshopping aside, this experiment on different beauty standards around the world was pretty fascinating (and hilarious in its ridiculousness).

So cool! The history behind Zzyzx Road. We passed this exit on our way to L.A. out of Las Vegas. I had no idea what it was.

That’s all for this week! I’ll have some photos to share on Tuesday when—gasp!—it’ll already be July.

How was your weekend? What are you looking forward to this week?

Interweb Finds: Sex robots, Crazy Eyes & more

John Mancini Band

It hit me yesterday that it’s mid-June.

No shit, right? But that midway point between last year’s Christmas and this year’s upcoming Christmas always gets me. It doesn’t help that this year in SoCal, it never stopped being summer, save for those occasional fall-like days.

The photo you see above is indeed one of John and me singing. He got a gig at Angel City Brewery (the spot where Rachel and I met for Beer with a Blogger), and I joined him for a couple of songs. It was a blast! I also made vegetarian dinners three nights in a row and did a headstand this week, so overall, I’m calling it a major success.

Here are this week’s interweb finds for your perusing pleasure:

A fascinating long read about… sex robots, among other things. The future of sex in a digital age:

“I ask Levy, a married man, what his wife would think if someone invented a sex robot and – out of academic interest – he wanted to sleep with it. ‘I don’t think she would have a problem from the infidelity point of view,’ he says. ‘I do think she would think I was off my trolley.'”

I’ll just be over here drooling over this pair of gorgeous vintage Fiats.

An interview with Orange is the New Black‘s Uzo Aduba, who plays Suzanne, a.k.a. “Crazy Eyes.” (Goes to show how great of an actor she is that I’m amazed at how down-to-earth she really is!)

One family’s story of raising a transgender kid. I hope how this family embraced their child’s true identity becomes the norm.

Nubby Twiglet’s post, “Stop Playing it Safe,” hits the friggen nail on the head.

I wish I’d seen this gorgeous dome house when I visited Joshua Tree. (It even has its own Instagram account.)

The secret life of an Airbnb host who slept in his office every night to make extra cash.

“An extra $1,350 a month was flowing into my coffers. […] After receiving my first batch of positive reviews, the reservations poured in. Sleep came easier on my camping mat, and I dreamed in eighties montages about being a runaway Airbnb success story. But there is a reason it’s not called Murphy’s Theory.”

And that’s all for today! Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there—especially mine on the other side of the country. I’m going to soak up the rest of my weekend by eating good food, reading a good book and trying not to stress over the little things. It’s not always easy, but it’s something I’m trying to remind myself of lately.

What are you looking forward to this week?
