Can you name 10 things you like about yourself?

Life’s most challenging moments aren’t always the big, life-changing ones. Often, they’re the little, annoying moments that can chip away at you.

And sometimes, that means your self-confidence takes a hit. Things like work, school, parenthood and just dealing with everyday minutia can shake up anyone’s confidence, and it’s easy to forget about one very important thing: self-love.

Which is why, when I saw several of my favorite bloggers joining in on a blog link-up about self-love, I knew I had to jump in. Balancing school and home life has been a challenge lately, so a reminder of what I love about myself is just what I needed. You too? Join me in coming up with at least ten things you like about yourself.

self-love

Here are my top ten favorite things about myself:

I have a good sense for what’s fair and just. It’s one of a Libra’s best traits. Maybe I should’ve been a lawyer?

I embrace my weirdness. I’ve learned that everything that makes you different, quirky or unusual is awesome and should be celebrated accordingly.

I’m a good girlfriend. I’m thoughtful, caring & loving… and he knows it. (And I know he knows it because he tells me.)

I take care of my body. I exercise. I stay hydrated. I eat well (for the most part). I don’t make excuses when I fall behind on upkeep.

I have excellent taste. In clothes, decor, food, music, books, blogs and people. It’s not everyone’s taste, but it’s mine and I love it.

I’m a talented writer. No point in feigning modesty. I’m good at writing because I come back to it every single day, and I aim for perfection every time.

I strive for the future. With every decision I make, I think about what it will mean for the long-term. I’m making important life and career choices that will hopefully result in nothing but positive things.

I live in the moment. While I’m always striving for the future, I also know how to forget about the things I’m stressing over and appreciate what I have here and now. It’s a good skill to hone.

I’m not afraid to take risks. If moving across the country to go to school for journalism isn’t a risk, I don’t know what is.

I’ve come a long way with being confident. And I’m gaining more confidence in myself every day.

Ah, that feels good. Now it’s your turn—what do you like about yourself?

Interweb Finds: Killer confidence, the music of trees & more

What was your favorite thing you did this week?

Mine was that I followed my own advice from my blog post earlier this week and removed myself from the computer. After meeting two of my good friends from school for an early brunch at KTCHN DTLA yesterday (so good), I realized it was absolutely gorgeous outside and that it would be sinful not to take advantage of the weather. So I changed into a pretty dress, and John and I went for a long walk along Sunset Boulevard, window shopping along the way. By the time we got home, my feet were pretty sore and I didn’t even mind. It was just what I needed.

Here are my latest favorite interweb finds:

I wrote a guest post for the lovely and talented Latrina at Of Trees and Hues about moving to California and thriving while taking big leaps.

More advice on writing an ebook that sells.

The Scar Project by photographer David Jay is one of the most moving projects I’ve come across in a long time. These (NSFW) photos depict young women who have battled breast cancer and bravely bare their scars to the camera. There’s such a range of emotions in each of these women’s faces, and I was brought to tears more than once.

Geeky and genius. A recreation of the Jurassic Park computer system.

If trees could sing, what would they sound like? This awesome video shows how tree rings were interpreted as musical notes and then played on a record player.

Whether you’re struggling with your self-image, feeling a little helpless or just having a rough week, Claire’s free guide to killer confidence is a thoughtful, helpful and loving resource to get back on track.

I love this idea: micro cottages for the homeless.

That’s all for today! What are you looking forward to in the next week? Me—spring break is right around the corner.

Vlogging with the League of Extraordinary Ladies

Today, I’m trying something new—vlogging.

And I’m in fantastic company as I join four other bloggers—Grace, Sarah, Manda and Lainey—as part of a new vlogging collaborative, League of Extraordinary Ladies. Each of us will post a video every week, and I’ll be the Friday contributor!

We were joined together by Peter DeWolf, the brains behind The Hooray Collective. If you’re a blogger/writer/photographer/vlogger looking for another outlet and haven’t heard of The Hooray Collective, check it out—Peter is actively look for new contributors!

Check out my introductory video from week one with the League of Extraordinary Ladies (or LXL for short) below, and follow along with everyone’s videos here. Each week will have a theme, and to kick it off, we each talked a bit about ourselves and answered the question, What would the first line of your autobiography be? (Can you guess the pop culture reference in my answer?)

Hope you’ll enjoy and follow along!

Where to look for inspiration

When I’m at a loss for something to write about, there’s usually a very simple explanation.

It usually means I’ve been stuck in a routine for too long, hunched over a computer for too long, overworked, under-exercised and/or lacking in sleep. (Conversely, being bored can have that effect too, though since grad school took over my life, I haven’t had that problem once.)

Despite my best efforts to fill out some semblance of an editorial calendar every month, I sometimes come up short on blogging ideas—or, the ideas I jotted down before no longer interest me. Luckily, it doesn’t last too long, because I know where to look for inspiration.

where to look for inspiration

Whether you’re a blogger or not, if you sometimes suffer from a lack of inspiration, these ideas will spark your creativity:

Go through your old photos. I’m always browsing through my photos to find something to go along with a blog post, but sometimes I go through my library before writing to see if I get any new ideas. Plus, it’s always fun to reminisce on a special day or trip. (Does anyone print out photos anymore? That’s something I’d like to start doing again.)

Find quotes by your favorite authors/artists/musicians. When a quote really resonates with you, it inspires an inner dialogue, either reaffirming something you believe in a more eloquent way or challenging you to think about something differently. Write down your thoughts and don’t edit yourself.

Talk to people who are much younger or much older than you are. Nothing like a kid’s innocent honesty or a grandparent’s wise insight to completely change your perspective, right? Whether it’s an eight-year-old or an 80-year-old, there’s always something to learn from them. (That obviously goes for different races, religions and gender identities, as well.) Expand your social circle and expand your horizons.

Make a list. A bucket list. A reverse bucket list. Places you’d like to visit. Things you’re really good at. People you admire. Books you really should read. People you should really call.

Play tourist in your own city. Think you’ve seen everything there is to see? Challenge yourself to find something new. If you drive everywhere you go, commit to an afternoon of walking around—even if it’s just in one area of a spread-out town—and you’ll likely notice things you’ve never noticed before.

Get off the Internet. File this under “advice to self.”  You can only aimlessly click through the black hole that is The Web for so long before you absorb exactly nothing you’ve read, and let’s face it—you’re checking Facebook more often than is healthy or normal. Pry your claw-shaped hands off the keyboard, close the laptop and stretch your limbs in the big, open space known as “outside.”

Have you found yourself in an inspiration rut lately? How do you pull yourself out of it?

Beer with a Blogger: The Daily Pint in Santa Monica

Beer and blogging—two of my favorite things.

Sometimes, I drink beer while blogging. (It helps with creativity and stuff.) But not too long ago, I thought a more social way of combining the two might be to drink beer with my fellow bloggers. So I’m kicking off a new series, and if you’re a blogger who loves beer and lives near L.A., I want you in on this. You pick the place, I come wielding a camera and—cheers!—it’s time for blogger happy hour.

But right now, let’s meet the first drinking buddy of the series, Diana from Sunshined.

THE BLOGGER: Diana Lopez, a web designer and blogger living in the West L.A. neighborhood of Sawtelle. She moved to Los Angeles about a year ago and lives with her boyfriend and two parakeets. Diana might seem shy at first, but she’s super smart, sweet and funny, and she’s not afraid to share her opinion—something I instantly liked about her. Last year, she wrote a guest post for me here on WTH. She tweets @pixelswithin.

THE BAR: The Daily Pint in Santa Monica, where it’s been for more than 25 years. It was voted as one of the top bars in the country on Barfinder.com for three years in a row, and it boasts 33 beers on tap, three beers on cask and more than 100 others in the bottle. The Daily Pint also has one hell of a whiskey list, which I had no interest in other than the fact that the sheer number of options was impressive. It’s got a great divey, neighborhoody feel to it, and our bartender, Alicia, was friendly and gave us some good beer recommendations.

THE BEER: Leinenkugel’s Snowdrift Porter for Diana and both a Stone IPA and a Goose Island Matilda Pale Ale for yours truly.

Since Diana is also an L.A. transplant, we talked a lot about what it’s like settling in after moving here. “I immediately loved L.A. and just took to it. There’s so much to do, and I haven’t taken advantage of it all yet, but I recently went to the bookstore, a record store and two farmers markets all in one day. I love it.”

One of her favorite rituals?

“I usually go to Santa Monica Beach just to walk around—it’s such a luxury.”

I was psyched to meet Diana after following her blog and Twitter for so long, and she picked a great, casual spot for imbibing. I hope to see Diana (and the Daily Pint!) again soon.

Are you a blogger living in (or visiting!) L.A.? Do you like beer? , and let’s go to happy hour!

Why don't you stick around?

Through the lens: photos from February

golden gate park

For such a short month, February was all over the map.

And it was an absolute whirlwind. I feel like I use that word a lot—whirlwind. But it’s a very accurate description of what life feels like lately. I’m just taking it all in.

One way I’ve been taking it all in is by taking even more photos than usual. Sometimes I go through photography slumps because I get bummed out that I’m not as knowledgeable about all the manual settings as I’d like to be, and I can’t justify shelling out the cash for a fancy lens. But I’ve made efforts to learn more about my camera over the past year or so, and I don’t need an expensive lens to be a good photographer. I’ve also gotten better at pretending not to care that I probably look more like a tourist than I do a photographer when I whip out the DSLR. So that helps.

Here are a few of my favorite shots from the past month, including pictures from my San Francisco trip last weekend. This first shot was really underexposed originally, so I played around with some edits… which resulted in this watercolor-y looking picture:

Meanwhile, back in Silver Lake, jasmine is in full bloom. EVERYWHERE. It’s my favorite smell.

John and I spent approximately 45 minutes in Santa Cruz on our way back from the Bay Area, but I’d love to spend a lot more time here. We sat here for a while watching the world’s happiest dogs run around on the dog-friendly beach. (And I fell deeper into my I-want-a-dog despair.)

So much beauty in this big, wild state. The amazing thing is, it’ll never run out—so there will always be plenty to photograph.

Bring on March! I’m looking forward to celebrating John’s birthday, getting some much-needed time off for spring break and discovering more of what the California coast has to offer. How about you?
